The More You Know: Affordable Housing
Its day three of our look at the latest letter from the folks working to repeal the zoning code. The next topic is Affordable Housing. We've been looking forward to this one!
They say, “The plan does not adequately address the lack of affordable housing for year-round residents, making it difficult for essential workers, young families, and long-term residents to remain in the community. While it proposes options like duplexes and accessory dwelling units (ADUs), the plan lacks measures to ensure these homes are affordable and available to residents rather than becoming vacation homes. “
They have certainly nailed the definition of one of our largest issues. We totally agree our community lacks affordable housing for year-round residents!
This Ole Ram is thrilled that the group acknowledges the value of our year-round working people and recognizes the challenges that they face to live in our community. This is truly something that we can build on together when the election is over regardless of how the vote comes out.
The planning commission included some sensible baby steps in the right direction in the new zoning code.
Wouldn’t it be great if community members developed a few innovative “workforce housing” proposals? We can’t wait to hear some great new ideas to one of our most difficult challenges.
There is real opportunity to come together to find sensible solutions-we don't need to repeal the new code to accomplish that goal. In fact, the new code opens the door to new options to address this tricky issue. Voting 'NO' will move us forward rather than taking us back as we work on our affordable housing problem.
