Yesterday, one of our neighbors stopped by to drop off candy for my two kids and a card for each. The cards said that if the kids ever needed anything, to stop by. Thanks Fred and Linda, you are a perfect example of what makes Harbor Springs such a special place to live.
There is warmth here, even when the weather turns cold. Maybe even more so when the snow flies. We rally to one another and care for those who need caring for.
I came across a quote today, “Halloween is a day when we get it right. Strangers come to us, beautiful, ugly, odd or scary, and we accept them all without question, compliment them, treat them kindly, and give them good things. Why don’t we live like that?”
In Harbor Springs, I feel like most of us who live here really try to live like that.
I am glad we are working on figuring out how to help more folks call our community home. It is a place worth joining. Not because it is quaint (it is) or because it reminds us of a different time (it does) but because of the people, like Fred and Linda, who open their doors and welcome the neighbor kids in.
As we wrap up this little campaign encouraging people to vote "No" and keep our zoning code, it has struck me that there really is a difference between the two campaigns.
The "Yes" campaign seems more concerned about the character of buildings and we on the "No" side are more concerned about the character of people.
Harbor Springs isn't special because of its classic Main Street and beautiful beaches. It is special because the people who live here, work here, and tend to the town all year round make it special. Thanks to every single one of you.
