Peek-a-boo

Many of you know, I became a father later in life. I didn't get to experience our kids as babies. I was, however, an awesome uncle who is a bit silly and prone to playing peek-a-boo.

So, as I was thinking about our upcoming public meetings, I was trying to remember that thing about babies that makes peek-a-boo so special. (I will readily admit, my head works in weird ways.)

Unable to remember this bit of trivia, I Googled it.

Turns out what I was trying to remember is called "object permanence." When babies are very young, their brains cannot quite understand that even when they can't see something, it is still there. The object is permanent. It exists. Even when it is out of view.

It only takes our little baby brains a few months to start to put the pieces together. We begin to understand that just because we can't see things they are still there. We start to understand our fun uncle doesn't really disappear. The game of peek-a-boo goes from a truly startling and bewildering magic exercise, to just a game of giggles and fun.

As we move into this time of public meetings about out new code, let's embrace our younger brains and remember our lessons in "object permanence." I hope that as many of you as possible can come to the 10 scheduled meetings to be held in the next month. But, just because you can't attend all of them, it doesn't mean they didn't happen. Comments will still be taken and new things learned.

Meetings have occurred over the last few years to gather input on the new code. I have only attended a few. But I know the ones I didn't attend still happened. Other people attended those. They chimed in with their two cents which is as valuable as anything I might say. My attendance at a particular meeting does not determine its value. Heck, I bet the meetings I miss are awesome!

Deep breath everyone. The meetings over the next month are an exercise in listening. They are a response to folks feeling like they want to talk more about changes in the new code. It is an important chance to understand and learn. I definitely plan to attend a few and share some thoughts, and I hope you do too!

If we don't get a chance to see each other at one of the meetings...I promise I didn't disappear! (But please go ahead and make the meeting awesome!)
