Jan. 16: Town Hall Notes
I hope some of you got to see the sunrise this morning. It was pretty spectacular, as they often are up here.
Last night, the Planning Commission held a Town Hall to hear about what residents might like to see in a new zoning code. I am so proud of the tone and tenor of the meeting. Yes, some very helpful and interesting ideas were discussed, but it was the community spirit that really stood out.
Please take some time to listen for yourself if you, like me, were unable to be there in person. The video is live here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=higm1BtyFT0
The big stuff that folks seemed to agree on last night might change. But here is what I heard: 1) There are some outdated things in the current code that could be addressed with some common sense fixes, and 2) That we should end up with a code that is formatted in a way that is easier to use.
It sure felt like good solid progress.
I also felt like the reasonable question, "Why do we need to change anything?" was addressed really well last night. It was pointed out that the current code (the one we are living under right now) allows:
> Adult oriented businesses on Main Street
> Mobile homes (on wheels) in several residential neighborhoods
> Rooming houses in residential neighborhoods
> Shipping containers for storage or in home construction
> No hard limit on building heights downtown
> No architectural standards for downtown buildings
No one at the meeting really wanted any of those things. Frankly, I can't think of anyone I have met, regardless of how they voted on the zoning code, who would say they want any of those things.
There are lots more ideas to collect. What we can and should celebrate is that last night, on a contentious issue, our neighbors came together to share ideas in a civil and respectful way.
I think a successful meeting is one where most folks leave feeling better than when they arrived.
Last night was a success. Thanks to all who worked so hard to help this process begin well. And thanks to all who participated and will participate in this important project. Forward Harbor Springs!!
