That’s Not How Any of This Works

We’ve gotten several comments and messages that ask if we are afraid of a vote on the new zoning code. We are not. If there are enough signatures to ask voters to repeal the ordinance (and we assume there are), we are confident our community will reject the petition people’s position if given the choice and facts.

How can we be so sure? We are a town who knows and respects one another. When these sorts of candidates and issues have come up in the past they have been rejected soundly.

The changes that have been made to the zoning code are relatively modest and the ill effects contemplated by the petition people are overblown. Each point they have made has been reasonably refuted. But their position does not change.

That’s the tip off. Democracy depends on people of goodwill admitting they are sometimes wrong. We’ve sadly come to a point where even the best arguments cannot sway the other side. They will not let facts get in the way of a good grievance. In contrast, those who worked on the new zoning code were willing to alter their positions and did so to accommodate those in opposition.

That’s how it is supposed to work.
